The FY2021 International Youth Development Exchange Program～Online Discussion Program～ Glocal Youth Summit”
The International Youth Development Exchange (INDEX) Program is an interactive project that started in 1994 in commemoration of the royal marriage of H.I.H. the Crown Prince. This program followed the Japanese Youth Goodwill Mission that commenced in 1959 to commemorate the royal marriage of the current His Majesty the Emperor who was the Crown Prince at that time and the Invitation of Foreign Youth to Japan which commenced in FY 1962.
The International Youth Development Exchange Program run by the Cabinet Office of Japan aims to promote mutual friendship and understanding between Japanese youths and youths of other countries; to broaden international perspectives, to foster the spirit of international cooperation, and develop the ability to put these principles into practice. The objective of the program is to nurture and develop youths who can demonstrate leadership skills in various fields in a global society and encourage social contribution activities by the youths.
“Glocal” is a word coined by combining global and local. The objective of this program through online discussions is to nurture and develop youths who can demonstrate leadership skills in various fields in a global society and encourage social contribution activities.
The main theme of the discussion this year is “Solving local issues for building a sustainable society.” To achieve a sustainable society, as addressed in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the youth will tackle the local issues and seek the latest needs, which they face closely in their daily life, through sharing knowledge and experiences. The youth of each country are expected to contribute to the creation of an affluent society by sharing the results of their discussions within their respective countries and regions.
Under the circumstances of COVID-19, to secure the health of participating youth, the online discussion program will be held for the benefit of participating youth. In this program, the participating youth of the Dominican Republic, the United Mexican States, and Japan will meet online, share their experiences and knowledge through an international exchange program.
In the SDGs’ 17 goals, there are common issues among three participating countries, related to the environment such as climate change, marine resources, ecosystems, and food security. People’s behavior and the environment are closely linked. Relevant examples are observed in the reduction of air pollution due to the transportation restrictions caused by the COVID-19, and plastic pollution in the ocean. Thus, during the Glocal Youth Summit, the participating youth will look for issues and new needs related to people’s lives and will solve the local issues by considering environmental aspects.
